Kunst ist nicht autonom, höchstens in der Abgrenzung zu anderen Funktionssytemen und auch hier nur bedingt. Kunst steht immer in einem sozialen Zusammenhang. Kunst erfüllt als Teilsystem der Gesellschaft eine Funktion. Kunst irritiert unsere Wahrnehmung. Moderne Kunst ist die Reflexionsebene der Gesellschaft. Sie ist Kybernetik zweiter Ordnung, weil sie uns als Rezipienten in die Beobachtung der Beobachtung zwingt. Kunst ist auf diese Weise ein permanenter Sidekick, die permanente Feedbackschleife, an der wir uns persönlich und als Gesellschaft lernend weiterentwickeln können – oder auch nicht. Das hängt davon ab, wie wir persönlich und als Gesellschaft Aspekte der Kunst selegieren und operationalisieren. Das wiederum ist das innovative Potenzial von Kunst.

Art is not autonomous if at all, in differentiation from other functional systems. Art is always part of a social context. Art confuses our perception. Art fulfils a function as a subsystem of society. Art is the level of reflection of society. It is second-order cybernetics, because it forces us as recipients into the observation of observation. In this way, art is a permanent Sidekick, a permanent feedback loop that we can use to learn and develop ourselves personally and as a society – or not. This depends on how we personally and as a society segregate and operationalise aspects of art. This, in turn, is the innovative potential of art.
