Taylor Swift staunte nicht schlecht über die Performance ihrer Freundin Kate Perry und Doechii bei den diesjährigen VMAs. Zur Erinnerung, das sind die guten alten MTV Video-Music-Awards, die es tatsächlich noch gibt, in Deutschland aber in der Bedeutungslosigkeit verschwunden sind. Man kann nicht einmal mehr die Videos der Webseite in Deutschland aufrufen. Neben einer gigantischen Show von „Mother Monster“ Lady Gaga und einem beeindruckenden Statement, was es für sie bedeutet, Künstlerin zu sein, kam schließlich die Performance von Perry und Doechii zu ihrem gemeinsamen Song: „I’m his, he’s mine“ und auch mir blieb die Spucke weg – holy moly!

Was gab es dort auf der Bühne, also der Main-Stage, zu sehen? Nichts geringeres als angedeuteten SESBIAN LEX, äh Lesbian Sex. Eine kleine Scissoring Einlage (mit Anziehsachen, na klar, die bei Perry allerdings aussahen wie ein Umschnalldildo) und ein bisschen eindeutig sexy Verbiegungen plus Moves der beiden.

Ein Kommentator schrieb auf Instagram dazu: „I feel like I’m watching a scene in a movie of a strip club.“ Stimmt! Aber da die Kinky-Welt und die Kunstwelt im Bereich der Performance eh mehr und mehr zusammenwachsen (Hello Poledance in der Berliner-Galerie, hello Striptease und Öl-Bodies im Schinkel-Pavillon – alles das kann man sich aber schon seit längerem und besser im Kit-Kat-Club ansehen) ist es nur logisch, dass populäre Künstler diese Kombi jetzt auch auf die Bühne bringen, oder?

Allerdings: Ausgerechnet in Zeiten des konservativ-christlichen und patriarchalen Backlashs? Mainstream-Künstlerinnen wie Kate Perry? Ausgerechnet auf der Mainstage des amerikanischen Fernsehens? Ausgerechnet Frauen, die nicht gerade den Ruf haben, Hardcore-Feministinnen zu sein? Ausgerechnet immer mit einem lautstarken, authentischen Eintreten für die LGBTQ+ Szene? Respekt!

Wie schon in meinem „Lady Gaga, Salvator Mundi“-Artikel geschrieben: als Kunsthistorikerin habe ich lange Zeit nach der Avantgarde gesucht, mir sehr vieles im aktuellen internationalen Kunstbetrieb angesehen – endlos moralisch belämmernde Dauerlangweile und endloser Kunst-Kapitalismus.

Niemals hätte ich gedacht, dass ich 2025 die künstlerische Avantgarde im Mainstream des Pops finde – well done, Kate Perry, Doechii & Lady Gaga! Die Macht ist mit euch!

Avant-Garde on main stage!

Even Taylor Swift was quite amazed by her friend Kate Perry and Doechii’s performance at this year’s VMAs. As a reminder, these are the good old MTV Video Music Awards, which actually still exist, but have disappeared into insignificance in Germany. You can’t even watch the videos on the website in Germany anymore. In addition to a gigantic show by Mother Monster Lady Gaga an impressive statement about what being an artist means to her, Perry and Doechii finally performed their joint song, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” and even I was left speechless—holy moly!

What was there to see on stage, i.e., the main stage? Nothing less than implied SESBIAN LEX, uh, lesbian sex. A little scissoring interlude (with clothes on, of course, although Perry’s looked like a strap-on dildo) and some unambiguously sexy contortions and moves from the two of them.

One commenter wrote on Instagram: “I feel like I’m watching a scene in a movie of a strip club.” True! But since the kinky world and the art world are increasingly converging in the field of performance (hello pole dancing in the Berlin gallery, hello striptease and oil bodies in the Schinkel Pavilion – but you can see all of that better and for longer at the Kit Kat Club), it’s only logical that popular artists are now bringing this combination to the stage, right?

However: In times of conservative Christian and patriarchal backlash? Mainstream artists like Kate Perry? On the main stage of American television? Women who don’t exactly have a reputation for being hardcore feminists? Always with an authentic loud advocacy for the LGBTQ+ scene? Respect!

As I wrote in my previous article “Lady Gaga, Salvator Mundi,” as an art historian, I spent a long time searching for the avant-garde, looking at a lot of the current international art scene— endless moralizing boredom and endless sleazy art capitalism.

I never would have thought that in 2025 I would find the artistic avant-garde in mainstream pop—well done, Kate Perry, Doechii, and Lady Gaga! The Force is with you!
